Why AI makes original thinking worth more

If everyone can generate a competent idea for free, the competent idea is worth nothing.

For a century, execution was the bottleneck. Having an idea was easy; making it real was the slow, costly, skilled part. So that's where the money pooled — and that's what most of the industry quietly sold: production.

AI has removed the bottleneck. Competent execution is now instant, infinite and close to free. A competent headline, a competent layout, a competent strategy deck — summoned in seconds, by anyone.

Which means competent is now worthless. Not poor — worthless. When everyone can have the obvious answer for nothing, the obvious answer stops being an advantage. It becomes a commodity, and commodities compete only on price, all the way down.

As the cost of making things falls to nothing, the value of knowing what's worth making rises to everything.

So what still has value? The one thing the machine can't hand you: judgement. The taste to know which idea is the right one. The nerve to back the unobvious answer over the safe one. The originality to reach for the thing that isn't in the training data — because it hasn't been thought yet.

This is the great inversion. The skill the last era under-priced — the leap, the point of view, the idea — is the only skill the new era rewards.

Make no mistake about what AI is: a magnificent engine for the average. Feed it the world's work and it returns the median of it — fluent, plausible, and just like everything else. Useful. Also a beige tide, and rising. The brands that drown in it will be the ones who used it to make more, faster, cheaper. The brands that rise above it will be the ones who used the time it freed to think harder, stranger, better.

We're not interested in machines that can make anything. We're interested in the judgement that decides what's worth making at all. That was always the valuable part. Now it's the only part.

That's the work. That's all the work.
